Biography / Info
|
- Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown pitched from
1903-1916.
- When he was seven years old, he stuck his right hand into
his uncle's corn shredder cutting off his index finger and
paralyzing his little finger. The damaged fingers gave Brown
a natural knuckle ball which became his specialty.
- Career record of 239-129, includes a 31-19 record when he
spent two years in the Federal League.

His Playing Days
|
- 1906: Ace of staff during Cubs 116-36 season. Led league in
winning percentage, earned run average and shutouts. To this
day, no team has won more games in a season than that
club.
- 1908: In one of the more memorable games in baseball
history, Brown relieved Cubs starting pitcher Jack Pfiester in the first inning
and wound up beating Christy Mathewson and the Giants in a
one game playoff at an unruly Polo Grounds.
- 1909: Possibly his finest season, leading the circuit in
wins, games, complete games, innings pitched and even saves.
Finished second in earned run average and shutouts.
- 1911: The last of his six consecutive 20 game winning
seasons. Led league in appearances and saves.
- 1914: Jumped to the Federal League and became player
manager of the St. Louis club.
